Clan War League (CWL) is a monthly competitive event in Clash of Clans where clans face 7 different opponents over 8 days to earn League Medals, climb leagues, and unlock Hero Equipment Ores from the League Shop.
CWL replaces normal Clan Wars during its 8-day window each month. Clans sign up during a 2-day signup period, get matched with 7 other clans of similar strength, then play 1 war per day for 7 consecutive days. Final placement determines whether your clan promotes, stays, or demotes between leagues.
The league ladder runs from Bronze III (lowest) up through Silver, Gold, Crystal, Master, and Champion (highest). Champion League I clans are the top of the competitive scene. Most casual clans live in Crystal or Master, where the difficulty is meaningful but not punishing for mistakes.
CWL uses a 5v5, 15v15, or 30v30 war size depending on league tier. Each player gets one attack per war and 7 wars total. Champion League is locked to 15v15. The 5v5 size was added in the February 2026 update to make CWL accessible to small clans.
Below Champion League, your clan picks the war size at signup time. The 5v5 format introduced in February 2026 is now the standard for small or rebuilding clans — it requires only 5 active members willing to commit to all 7 wars. The classic 15v15 remains the most common size for medium clans, while 30v30 is reserved for large clans with deep rosters.
Each roster member gets exactly one attack per war day, so individual contribution is direct and visible. Missed attacks cost the clan stars, which costs medals at the end of the season. Most clans require 7/7 attack participation as a baseline for staying on the CWL roster.
CWL rewards are League Medals — earned based on individual war stars and clan placement. The formula is 20% medals for being on the roster, plus 10% per war star earned, capped at 100% for 8 stars. Medals are spent in the League Shop on Hero Equipment Ores, Hammers, potions, and skins.
The medal math rewards both participation and performance. A player who appears on the roster but earns zero stars still gets 20% of the medal pool — but a player who 3-stars all 7 wars (8 stars maximum since one war counts both halves) earns the full 100%. Champion League rosters can earn 700+ medals per season at full performance.
League Medals are arguably the most valuable currency in the game in 2026. They unlock Glowy Ore and Starry Ore — the limiting reagents for Hero Equipment leveling — at rates that exceed what casual play produces. Players who participate in CWL every month progress hero equipment 2–3x faster than non-participants.
The League Shop also rotates exclusive Hero Skins (gold-trim variants) and Building Skins. These never appear elsewhere, making CWL the only path to certain cosmetics.
Use a dedicated anti-3 star war base in CWL. Each star counts individually toward your clan ranking, so a base that consistently limits attackers to 2 stars across 7 wars saves more total stars than a base that occasionally gets 1 star but sometimes gives up 3.
CWL is unforgiving of inconsistent defensive design. With 7 attacks against your base across 7 days, the attacker pool sees your base from many angles and tests every weakness. An anti-3 star design with asymmetric layout and well-distributed traps performs more consistently than a "high-ceiling, high-floor" design that can either 1-star or get 3-starred.
Rotate between 2–3 saved war bases across the 7 wars. After your base takes its first attack, the replay is available to anyone in your clan and the enemy clan can scout it. Using the same base for all 7 wars gives skilled attackers a planning advantage by war 4–5. Two rotations between three bases breaks this pattern.
